Palm Trees

Tob made these palm trees from toothpicks and scouring pads.

Crimp and barely bend the toothpicks from the tip down using needle nose pliers. The toothpicks should pick up a gentle curve. Too curvy will be your first problem, but you'll get it right second try. Then paint the trunks like a palm (or coconut, your choice) trunk.

At this point, find some appropriately sized beads or seeds or clay balls to use as coconuts, if you're going this route. Paint them coconutty and glue to trunks (not pictured). Now cut little triangles from green scrubbie off-cuts. Slice them as shown below, spread the fronds out, and glue to tops of trunks.

The island base shown in the first, and last, pictures is half of a credit card with a pink foam corner off-cut partially melted with a heat gun. Coated with white glue (PVA), it was then covered in sand and left to dry. Used tea bags provided the brown flock you see as dead palm fronds, and a couple more seeds (coriander) added as fallen coconuts. Consult your local Japanese geriatric Ikebana Master for proper placement of trees, or barring the presence of aforementioned Master, stick trees in randomly. Done.
